How to Ensure Call Quality in Cloud Communication

Ever since cloud has merged with the communication system, the results have thrived to be none less than superb. Cloud communication has made it a lot simpler to make business communication with the help of features that make the most out of the available technical capabilities.

In the point of view of a caller, it is observed that while making a communication, the voice quality and other factors play a big role in the overall calling experience. Let’s see how call quality is ensured in cloud communication.

Call Quality in Cloud Communication

As cloud communication works based on internet, the analog voice is turned into packets of data. That carries the information from one end to another. The link between these two nodes is ‘Internet’ that joins them. Here the quality of voice depends on three main factors.

● Latency
● Jitter
● Packet Loss

Let’s try to understand them one by one.

‘Latency’ is the time taken by the voice packet to reach the receiving end. So lesser the latency the better the call quality. A latency of 150ms is not noticeable and once it crosses 300ms, it becomes unacceptable.

‘Jitter’ is about the variation of that the individual packets take to make their way through the internet. It shows internet congestion and time drift. Jitter is calculated in milliseconds (ms) – thousands of a second. Jitter greater than 50ms results in packet loss and an unacceptable call quality.

‘Packet Loss’ or data loss occurs when some packets are not carried to the final destination due to congested network or switches. More data loss defines more words going unheard at the other side.

Once the analog voice calls are converted into packets of data, they move just like any other type of data over the internet. So, the quality of call totally depends on the packets released from one end and received at the other end in the best quality in numbers.

The larger the number of data packets the better the call quality. How these data packets are dealt with once they are released, let’s see.

A) Bandwidth

Call quality totally depends on the bandwidth that is allocated to execute the calls and also the quality of the internet. Although a good bandwidth is capable of carrying greater number of data packets to make a call through.

A good bandwidth ensures that the carrying capabilities of the data packets are of good in quality and the execution of a call gets much easier.

So, a bandwidth depicts the data transfer rate of the internet. In a given time how much data is transferred, decides the bandwidth of the network. It is necessary to pick a suitable bandwidth from the internet service provider (ISP) for VoIP.

This is a deciding factor for the call quality. Also, when there are several concurrent calls, it becomes easier to execute all the calls with higher bandwidth. With a suitable bandwidth, the problems such as packet loss and latency can be easily controlled.

B) Codec

Codec is a short form of ‘compression’ and ‘decompression’. The purpose of a codec is to compress the data when it is transmitted and again decompress it when it is received. In telecommunication, as we saw, a call is basically the packets of data that is sent and received at two different ends.

There are various codecs available in the market but call quality always depends on the perfect choice made for the codec.

There are two kinds of Codec that are generally used in the cloud communication these days. One is G.722 and another one is G. 729. Let’s look at how they differ from each other.

• G.722

This codec ensures a good call quality and definitely stands ahead of the public switching telephone network (PSTN). But for a better call quality, it seeks a much higher bandwidth.

• G.729

The G.729 codec is best suited when the internet speed is much lesser and a call needs to get through. So, it can get a call through despite lower bandwidth. To get multiple concurrent calls through on a smaller bandwidth with good call quality G.729 works better.

Cloud communication has been there as a robust alternative call solution since long and is gradually finding a firm footing among its new users as well.

The main reason that has catered cloud communication to such heights is the benefit it carries with outstanding call quality. And with the gradual support from the cloud technology it has become a promising prospect of communication.

    I agree with all the points mentioned by you.
    But I think there are times when feedbacks occur on a call and destroys the whole call quality.
    And such issues should not be ignored.
